The Artsy Equine: Day 15, Dog 15

What strikes me most about Reba and Nibbles is their devotion to one another, their ability to underscore the importance of family. THS followers already know and love these girls but how wonderful would it be if we could find them the perfect family for the new year? These bonded sisters arrived at the shelter in the spring of 2013 as feral puppies who couldn't be handled. Over time they came to understand love and had made huge improvements in trust. They started attending adoption events but still needed a lot of work being out of the shelter. Fortunately one of our wonderful adoption event volunteers really took them under her wing and worked with them at the events and ultimately took them home to foster in May. They are doing great in their foster home and at events, and are very ready for a home of their own now. We are so proud of these girls and how far they have come. They are bonded and must be adopted together, so we need a family with enough love for 2 dogs. They will do best in a family without young kids, as children grabbing or getting in their face scares them. They are sweet and gentle, get along well with other dogs and will need a securely fenced yard to run and play. They are housebroken, crate trained and walk very nicely on leashes. They are up to date on vaccines, spayed and heart-worm negative.

The Artsy Equine: Day 14, Dog 14

Day 14 belongs to Fielder. Some of you might be familiar with his history but in case you're new to THS, Sandy tells his story best...

"3-17-14 - I couldn't believe it the first time I saw him in the fields north of town. It was at a distance but I could tell he was a very large dog. He was certainly not what we typically see in Tunica County with our strays. He was roaming a very large area and he touched my heart every time I spotted him because he looked so alone and lost. He even showed up in my backyard one night out of the blue. After several weeks of tracking him, I named him Fielder. He was running from one cotton field to the next and it was starting to take it's toll on him. He had begun to limp on one of his paws. I came up with a plan to draw him into one particular field so I could attempt to trap him. I put food out everyday on my way into town. After a few days, I was seeing him regularly at the food so I got very hopefully that soon Fielder would be safe in our care. The second night, while it was sleeting and freezing rain, Fielder circled the trap and went in. It took 3 of us to carry him out of the field and we sunk in the mud up to our knees. But what a happy night it was, when Fielder was finally rescued. He has a beautiful life now with a family that loves him beyond measure... Capturing Fielder is of my most special moments of 2014."

I hope you will all consider supporting this incredible shelter in whatever way you can. Adopt, foster, volunteer, sponsor, donate, or buy some art ;)

The Artsy Equine: Day 13, Dog 13

Regal and her babies are our number 13 lucky dogs.. This beautiful girl was terrified, alone, and pregnant on the streets of Memphis. It took a team of people and many days of dedicated work to bring her to safety. Regal was brought to a foster home where she gave birth to  three gorgeous little girls. They will all be looking for their forever homes soon. Please share this post with anyone you think might be interested in adopting, volunteering, sponsoring, fostering, donating, or buying a painting of a shelter dog.

The Artsy Equine: Day 12, Dog 12

The image of Sheba running freely through across the grounds of the Tunica Humane Society  is in stark contrast to her pre-THS life. This beautiful girl was tied to a tree and abandoned by her family in Tunica County. THS writes on their Facebook page, "They left behind one of the sweetest, most loving little dogs we have had at our shelter in a long time. She is so thankful to be with us and she showers us with kisses every day. Sheba plays well with other dogs and she would be perfect with children. She has an extremely gentle touch." Sheba has since been adopted but there are countless dogs still waiting for their happy ending.  If you are interested in supporting dogs like Sheba, half the purchase price of all the 30 in 30 paintings will be donated directly to THS.

*UPDATE*   Great News! Garbo has been adopted but you can still support THS by purchasing her portrait :) CLICK HERE to buy this painting.

Garbo is our featured dog for day 11. She was one of the little pittie puppies dumped at the Mississippi River a few weeks ago. One of her sisters has already been adopted and her other sister is in a foster home. So that has left little Garbo behind at our shelter. No worries, she is getting lots of attention but she deserves a home of her own. Garbo is available for adoption thru the Tunica Humane Society - Tunica, Ms. - 662-519-1700

The Artsy Equine: Day 10, Dog 10

Keeper is our day 10 star and she is still looking for her "furever" family. She arrived at THS just over a year ago as an owner surrender. She was in really rough shape and needed a lot of TLC. She has been in a loving foster home since February and is healthy, happy and ready to find her perfect home. She is about 4 yrs old, great with kids and dogs. She would not be a good fit with cats. Keeper is very loving, likes to cuddle and be close to her humans. She is very laid back, calm and well behaved dog. Housebroken, crate trained and walks very nicely on a leash. As you can see, she some family will be very lucky to adopt this precious girl. She is up to date on vaccines, spayed and heartworm negative following treatment earlier this year.

Please share this post with all your dog and art loving friends. Half the purchase price of all the 30 in 30 THS paintings will be donated directly to the shelter.

The Artsy Equine: Day 9, Dog 9

I'll vouch this pup too. I remember him from my first visit to THS. I left with the impression Highway was an incredibly sweet and devoted boy who deserved to be in a home as loving as he was. I guess I was pretty close to correct because here is what those who know him best have to say,  "This dog had the most loving home and then a tragic thing happened to his family and he had to come back to our shelter. It happens without fail, the moment I open Highway's gate, he flies straight into my arms. He does the same thing with my sister and Melissa and Lori. He completely wraps his body around us. It seems that he lives for that moment of comfort each day. For just a moment he is frozen in our arms and then he is off to the playground to take care of his business. And then just as quickly he is right back by our side, lying at our feet while we finish cleaning his kennel. Highway was a very loved dog and they spent a great deal of time with him so being back at the shelter has been hard on this dog." Lets help him find his forever home...

The Artsy Equine: Day 8, Dog 8

Day 8's star is Brewsky. He seems like the most joyful boy. An animal's happiness is infectious and I know when this precious dog finds his forever family he will bless them with his joy. I loved this little story about Brewsky and his friend Sabrina receiving a gift from their sponsor family: "THE FAGAN FAMILY has done it again! Brewsky and Sabrina got an amazing package of goodies today from their sponsor family. Beautiful new blankets and lots of toys and treats. These two dogs are so hard to photograph because they get so excited when their stuff arrives. They are literally dancing in their kennel...." We should all be so lucky to have such happiness in our lives. Visit your local shelter and adopt some happiness for yourself.

The Artsy Equine: Day 7, Dog 7

One week down, three to go. So far we've raised about $250 for THS. I'll admit, this challenge has been a little more of a challenge than I imagined but I'm so grateful for everyone's support. I hope you will keep sharing updates so we can raise even more money for this worthy cause.

Day 7 belongs to Duke. Senior dogs hold an extra special place in my heart (see below.) I can't imagine abandoning my canine family member and yet it happens everyday. Through no fault of their own, beautiful dogs like Duke are sent out into the world to fend for themselves. Fortunately, this old guy found his way to THS and then to his forever home.

Half the sale price of this painting will be donated to help fund the miracles happening daily at THS. CLICK HERE to purchase this painting.

The Artsy Equine: Day 6, Dog 6

Day 6 belongs to Oscar. Some A-hole had the gall to throw this precious little fella into a dumpster. A kind woman discovered him while dumping her trash. After throwing up piles of garbage, a good bath and a trip to the vet, his good luck continued... Oscar was adopted into loving home, proving the old saying true "One man's trash... " Visit your local shelter and find your treasure. No animal is disposable.
