Day 25, Dog 25

I remember watching Little Orphan Annie as a kid and being more interested in her dog than her escapades. I think that is probably what drew me to Skipper. With his scruffy little face he looks like a modern day Benji. A modern day three-legged Benji. I know Skipper will be a special needs adoption but just look at his precious face. . .

Only 5 days left in my 30 shelter dogs in 30 days challenge. Please share this (and past posts) with anyone you think might be interested in following along.

Day 23, Dog 23

*UPDATE* Dimples has been adopted :) I'm so happy for this little girl.

A quick scan of the Tunica Humane Society Facebook feed produces half a dozen Dimples posts.  Each one captioned with some version of "she is the sweetest thing"  and each photo is  more adorable than the next. There is no reason this sweet baby should still be in the shelter. Share this post and help Dimples find her forever home.

"Dimples is just precious. She loves being close to people, is good with other dogs and kids. She is such a sweet baby and only about 30lbs.

"Dimples is a precious, sweet dog. I have no doubt that she will be adopted very soon. She is loving, gentle with children, and great with other dogs. She would be a very easy foster dog because she would fit into any home easily. It you have a place in your heart and your home for Dimples, just temporarily, while we search for her forever family, please call me at 662-519-1700. Freeing up her kennel will allow us to save another dog in desperate need of rescue.

Day 22, Dog 22

lily.jpg

Those eyes . . .  Lily is  another incredible THS transformation. A beautiful girl who endured unimaginable cruelty and still found a way to forgive. We could all learn something from her. I know  much has been written about Lily but I thought I'd share a couple of posts.

"3-9-14 - I got a call from our animal control officer about a stray dog he had picked up in one of our neighborhoods. Nobody was claiming responsibility for her. They never do in Tunica County. I asked him to stop by my business so I could take a look at her before transporting her to our shelter. Needless to say, her condition was so grave, I rushed her straight to the hospital. I honestly thought that she was too far gone to be saved. But I underestimated the healing power of LOVE. Fran Jendras called me within minutes of Lily appearing on our Facebook page. She stepped up to foster and see Lily through the valley of darkness into the light of her beautiful new life. Fran poured her heart into Lily and with each new day, she got stronger. She survived heartworm treatment, when we feared that she might not. Today Lily lives a very charmed life. She is Blessed with, not one but two moms. Her foster mom, Fran and her forever mom, Phyllis. There is not a more loved dog on the face of this Earth...."

"We have been so blessed by this beautiful baby and she will always hold so much of our hearts and I know I will cry like a baby when she leaves because selfishly we will miss her, but because we love her we will let her go to her "Perfect" family. In less than 2 weeks this beautiful baby will be joining her "perfect forever family" in Louisiana. She will go to work every single day with her new mommy and her other fur-brother Or probably more like her new "Boyfriend" the way Lily loves on the boys (who is just her size). Both mommy and Fur-Brother have driven many hours and spent two different weekends with Lily over the last four months and this is a match made in heaven. They will be able to offer Lily the life that Lily needs to cater to her separation anxiety needs and her needs of never being confined to kennel or run, she will be with her mommy nearly 100% of the time. She will have a totally shaded (perfect for a solid white dog) fenced yard that is probably 5 times larger than ours and two decks from their front door that over hang a beautiful lake with squirrels and lots of doves that feast daily on the food provide from the deck. Lily's future fur-boyfriend was also a rescue pup that was in as bad a condition as Lily was when she was rescued. The love I see in Pete's eyes and his actions (her furbaby) when he looks at his mommy, tells me that she is a very special human that will love Lily more than life itself. This pending adoption I am positive was arranged by our precious Lord and Savior, because he cares for all his creations."

Day 21, Dog 21

I love happy endings. So I really love  two happy endings, two days in row. THS facilitates miracles. Wally is another touching story demonstrating the power of love. I hope you will read his moving story told by the women who love him most.

"February 11, 2014 - I received a message about a little blind dog that had been dumped at the end of a gravel road. I drove to Tate County as fast as I could as soon as I saw his picture. What I remember most about him on the long ride to the clinic, was how defeated he was, as he sat in the seat next to me. He was overwhelmed with sadness. Everything on his body hurt. What kind of person could do such a heartless thing... What kind of person could have let him get in the condition he was in and then just throw him away... In the end, everything worked to the Glory Of God for this little dog because he found the family he was always meant to be with. He found Jodi. His name is Wally and he is the most precious little soul in the world.I have received so many messages asking for an update on Wally."

"I am happy to report that Wally is doing wonderful! Many of you have followed his story from day one and have been through all the triumphs and setbacks. From cataract surgery and regaining his vision to struggling through heartworm treatment and his last hurdle with glaucoma and having his left eye removed. Throughout all of this Wally remains to be one of the sweetest pups ever. The unconditional love and bond that he and I share is unlike any I've known. We recently had to say goodbye to our 16.5 year old fur baby and one evening as I sat alone in the living room and had my emotional breakdown Wally came to my side nudged my arm and licked my cheek. From the day we picked up Wally I knew there was something special about him. Something unlike any of our other Foster pups. I just didn't realize how much he would touch our lives. We are so thankful to THS, Dr Lisa, and Dr Miller. Our sweet Wally will always be cherished and loved."

Day 20, Dog 20

It's official! Junior (now Bowden) is home. I know there are thousands of us who have followed Junior's incredible journey over the past several months but I think it is worth celebrating such a dramatic transformation.. These photos are more powerful than anything I could write.

Bless his foster family for their love, commitment, and hard work nursing him back to health. Follow along (https://www.facebook.com/CampSiebert) as they continue to change lives through fostering.

Day 19, Dog 19

Have you ever seen such a precious little scruffy face? Probably not. Christian is our Day 19 model and I am shocked this little guy hasn't found his forever home yet. Right now he is in a fantastic foster home but let's all try to find him a more permanent situation. Please share this post with anyone you think might be interested in adopting, fostering, donating, volunteering, sponsoring or buying some art.

Day 18, Dog 18

Day 18 belongs to Max. Even though he he is incredibly sweet and affectionate, he was recently returned to the shelter (through no fault of his own.) Nevertheless, Max is lucky; he has a loving, supportive sponsor family.

The sponsor program at THS is a great way to make a difference for a shelter pet while they wait for their forever families to find them.  Please contact THS for more information and please share this post with anyone you think might be interested in sponsoring,, adopting, fostering, donating,, volunteering, or buying some art ;)

Day 17, Dog 17

Waffle is our  dog of the day. Many of you already know Waffle's story. "He was abandoned on the sidewalk in front of the Waffle House in Tunica when he was just a tiny puppy. The TV stations did a story on this adorable little puppy that was put out on the streets, all alone. He was quickly adopted by a family but recently was returned to our shelter because of health issues in the family. Waffle is now about 10 months old. He still has a great deal of puppy in him. He is very high energy and would do best in a home with another dog as a playmate. He loves children and needs a family that will spend lots of time with him. Waffle is still a work in progress but with some training, he will make some family a loyal, loving companion. He is a stunningly beautiful dog."

The Artsy Equine: Day 16, Dog 16

It's Fluffy Dog Friday :) A fan favorite, I know most of you are familiar with her story but just in case you missed it here is Sandy's recounting of her rescue.

"Last summer I received calls from 2 different ladies who had followed this dog's plight for months. They both were asking for our help. I was touched by how desperately they wanted her rescued. At first it was just a challenge and I love a good challenge when it comes to rescuing a dog. Especially, when everyone else has been unsuccessful. But after that first night, when I laid eyes on this frightened dog, it became more than just a challenge. Getting Fluffy Dog to safety became part of my heart.

Melissa and I started our quest for Fluffy on a Monday night. It was raining so hard that night, we ended up in a Pizza Parlor, waiting for the rain to subside. We thought we would have some fun and make a few videos about our efforts that first night. When those videos hit our Facebook page, it seemed the whole world got on the Operation Fluffy Dog bandwagon.

By Tuesday night, most of the people in Southaven knew we were trying to capture the big fluffy dog and everything turned into a circus. Cars parked across the street observing as we tried desperately to bond with the dog, people waving as they went by, shouting and wishing us luck, even a shrine of toys appeared at the car wash where Fluffy liked to hang out. By Wednesday, I was really feeling the pressure because there were others that had entered the quest for Fluffy. She was being followed at every corner. I suddenly became very concerned for this terrified dog because so many people were pursuing her. That's when I called in Pat Hissong to join Melissa and I in our mission to bring Fluffy to safety. It became very urgent to me at that point because I didn't want to see Fluffy hurt in any way.

We took Thursday night off, to let the fluffy dog frenzy die down. And we made a commitment that we were going to capture Fluffy on Friday night, regardless of how long it took. The plan was to get her while she was sleeping. I had been feeding her out of my hand all week so she was comfortable staying in the same area with us. We just had to wait till she got tired enough, to lay down close by. It finally happened at about 2 am, in the grass by the bank. The plan was to throw a blanket over her, wrap her up and throw in my car. Problem was, she woke up just before Pat got to her. That didn't stop Pat Hissong, she just threw herself on top of the dog and pinned her to the ground. Melissa and I rushed in, threw the blanket over Fluffy and tossed her in a kennel. We had her and what was surprising was how calm she was, once we loaded her up. I think Fluffy Dog was as relieved as we were. She was finally safe and she knew her struggles were over."
